Optimist
The Optimist, while used as a beginner boat may be sailed until the age of 15. It is a simple single-handed, one sail boat. An "Opti" weighs 75 lbs is eight feet long and can be lifted by two children. This is a world-class boat and an Opti sailor can attend regattas around the world.
Blue Jays
The Blue Jay is considered our intermediate boat. This boat is sailed with at least two sailors. There are three sails - the main sail, jib and spinnaker. This boat introduces teamwork and cooperation. The age of a Blue Jay sailor is also 8-15.
Laser Radial
Minimum weight for a Laser Radial is 95 lbs. All Lasers are one skipper, one sail boats. The Radial sail is smaller than the standard Laser sail. This is considered to be an advanced ability boat. Our sailing program does not own Lasers. There is a privately owned fleet at our club.
Laser
Minimum weight for a Laser is 130 lbs. This is a high performance boat that is used by the older advanced, competitive sailors. This is also a privately owned fleet at our club.
Club 420
Required crew weight is a minimum of 220 lbs. This is an advanced racing boat with three sails. It requires two experienced sailors.
Port Washington Yacht Club owns and maintains a fleet of teaching boats for the sailing program. A Junior Sailor that uses a club boat in our sailing program is expected to treat that equipment with respect, care and responsibility.
