Jr. Programs

Members of the Port Washington Yacht Club may enroll their children in the extremely popular and fun-filled summer program which is segmented by age and interest:

Guppies

Age 5 – 7
Monday - Thursday, 9-2:30.

Guppies enjoy the yacht club and all its venues, get comfortable on the water and develop boating readiness. Children are grouped by age and led by 2 – 4 counselors per group. Groups are identified by colors: Red, Yellow or Green. Guppies kayak, play tennis, and participate in movement twice a week. They swim daily with instructional swim twice a week. Guppies have weekly boat time where they ride the launch. Additionally, weekly classes are led by specialists. Additional shows and activities are planned each week. Lunch can be packed or purchased. A snack is included.

Junior Sailing with Junior Activities

Ages 8 – 12
Monday – Friday, 9 – 5

This is a learn –to–sail program where juniors follow an eight week sailing curriculum for 3 hours daily and enjoy the club and all its venues the remainder of the day. Juniors are grouped by age and separated by gender. Generally, two counselors lead each group on land. On water, juniors are divided into groups of 8 and led by one sailing instructor.

Sailing instruction alternates daily from 9:30–12:30 or 1:30-4:30. The goal is for sailors to represent the PWYC Sailing team at the Make a Wish regatta, the PWYC team race and the 4 JSA regattas.

After sailing, activities include kayak, tennis twice a week, free swim and elective time. Weekly classes are led by specialists and additional shows and activities are planned each week. Lunch can be packed or purchased. A snack is included.

Junior Sailing: Race Team

Ages 7-16
Monday – Friday, 9 -5

The Race groups cover the Optimist, Laser, Pixel and C420. These groups are geared for skippers who are focused on attending the scheduled JSA regatta for their respective boat class. Highly experienced collegiate instructors are hired to expand the skipper’s competitive sailing skills on the water. Generally skippers have two or more years sailing (usually an Opti) to enter the Race groups. The events are competitive but also cordial on the water and parents are needed to shepherd the boats to and from the regattas. PWYC has a 10 Opti trailer to help transport. Clubs will have support boats or parent boats available for parents to head out and watch the races for the day.

The ultimate goal of the program is for skippers to sail in a high school and subsequently a college venue.

Junior Sailing: Adventure Sailing

Ages 12 and up
Monday – Friday, 9 -5

Adventure sailing program was set up to capture kids who are looking to stay sailing but not race all the time. Kids will learn a variety of boats: 420, pixel, laser, Open Bic, Hobie, V15 and the ideal 18. We will also spend time teaching kids basic power boat skills and will arrange them to get the NYS power boat license. The group will also go on full day trips to places such as SUNY Maritime, Kings Point and a few sister yacht clubs.

Club and Private boats:
The PWYC Junior program strongly encourages for juniors to have their own boats after their first year of sailing. Club Optimists are available for free the first year followed by a use fee in the subsequent years.

Private Optis ownership is encouraged to teach boat maintenance and for competitive reasons at regattas. The club has a few pixels for regattas but parents must make arrangements to purchase or charter a laser or 420 for the season.

Junior Sailing: Big Boat Sailing

Ages 14 and up
Monday – Friday, 9 -5 mixed within Racing and Adventure sailing

We have a keel boat program for the junior sailors who would like to experience racing on a different level. This program will be open to members of the junior program who are at least 14 years old. This program has a limited availability and will be offered to those that are willing to commit. Seniority will also be given preference

Requirements:
Participation in the Navigation and Seamanship Test, Completions of the Safety at Sea Seminar hosted by the Storm Trysail Club at LYC, Completion of a majority of the weekly training sessions.
